The Extinguisher
Water is the most widely used Extinguishant solely used for application to fires in solid
carbonaceous materials. It extinguishes fire by cooling the burning material to a
temperature where it will not support combustion.
The Application
CAUTION: Not for use on fires involving live electricity or electrical
equipment, flammable liquid fires or gaseous fires.
Fire Rating †
The fire rating of an extinguisher is intended to provide an indication as to the
effectiveness of the fire extinguisher and not a direct indication of the size of any
actual fire which an inexperienced operator could extinguish. Anyone who may have to use
an extinguisher should be trained in its use and receive basic instruction in safe fire
fighting.
Extinguisher Selection
The selection of extinguishers against known risks is a complex process and usage's
referred to are given for general guidance only.
